People working on laptops in a meeting

Celebrating our people here at Statement, we sat down with Project Manager, Sarah Tyas, to discuss how you don’t have to start off with all the technical knowledge to find your way into a tech career. She might not have been with us for long but Sarah has combined confidence and determination to herself with a fulfilling career in tech.

how did you get into a career in tech?

I suppose I didn't really know that I was getting into a career in tech. I did a psychology degree at university, which I knew I didn't want to pursue afterwards. I was working in retail at the time, I loved it and after I graduated, I then started looking for retail head office roles and got into merchandising. It was suggested to me that I might be a good project manager as there are lots of overlapping skills.

I already knew Hollie who was working at Statement, and she thought it would be something I was good at. I wanted to stay in a retail type environment, but it was a bit of a change for me coming to an agency rather than being in-house. I wanted to still work with brands and help them be successful and now I get to work with tons of different brands, which is nice.

tell us about a career highlight…

We're working with a new brand that's launching next year and when I heard that they were in the pipeline, I put my name forward as being interested. This has been a really good opportunity because it's my first role in project management, but other team members have been really supportive in letting me get involved and help where I can. I'm learning the process from start to finish which I wasn't expecting to do so soon.

why do you think tech has a reputation of being a male-dominated career path?

We have female developers, but whether it’s project management or account management, there are so many different types of roles. I think people don't necessarily know they exist until they fall into them, or if you are specifically looking for something like that. But I was surprised at just how female-driven tech can be, especially at a place like Statement.

what advice would you give to women just starting in their tech careers?
