Amazon’s Prime Now delivery service is now available in Leeds and the surrounding areas, bringing a one-hour delivery option to over 15,000 of products on its marketplace.
On orders over £20, for a delivery charge of £6.99, Prime members can now find their order on the doorstep within one hour. Alternatively, a two-hour same day delivery time slot is available at no extra charge to users. The Prime Now service is available between 8am and midnight, seven days a week and you can check your eligibility here.
Amazon’s move into local rapid delivery service presents an additional challenge to traditional retail in an already rapidly changing space.
Whilst many large retailers now offer more convenient options for consumers like Click & Collect, some brands take longer than 2 hours to even prepare an order - whereas Amazon could have delivered an order in that time. Many independents of course don't offer anywhere near this level of customer information and convenience, which is why we’re so passionate about our Statement Retail service.
The implications of Amazon’s expansion of Prime Now will be further pressure on retailers to innovate and provide excellent service across the board.
For high street retail, it reinforces the need to focus on experiential commerce - ensuring that the instore shopping environment is more than just about buying goods but about having a great day or evening out.
Amazon’s sheer scale and resources will inevitably keep eating into the utility ‘I need it’ shopping market. High Streets still have a lot to play for with experience commerce, something that online just can’t deliver… yet.
